ABOUT THE SHIP

dots-start-dots-row-1

The Polar Pioneer stands out in that she’s not fancy, but she gives you an authentic expeditionary feel. Originally a research vessel built in Finland 1982, she was refurbished to become a versatile polar region passenger vessel in 2000 and is a favourite among expedition staff to work on because she is so agileThe Polar Pioneer offers the option of triple, twin, and suite cabins, all of which feature outside facing portholes or windows and plenty of storage space for your outer gear.

  • 116 passengers
  • En suite toilet and shower in all cabins
  • A full complement of Mark V zodiacs
  • 2 gangways on starboard side
  • Diesel-electric propulsion system reducing noise and vibrations from engine
  • Average speed 10-12 knots
  • Ice-strengthened
  • Total crew of 45 (17 crew, 19 hotel staff, 8 expedition staff and 1 doctor)

WHY WE LIKE HER

  • SIZE

At only 54 passengers this little converted research vessel is both nimble but also offers a more intimate and personal expedition experience than some of the larger vessels. As a passenger you’ll always get maximum time on shore and have lots of personal space to take in your surroundings.

  • SPEED

Speed of operations – what can we say? She’s just quick. From the time the ship anchors up near a landing site to the time zodiacs are in the water is minimal which means you get more time on shore or zodiac cruising around icebergs looking for whales.

  • WELCOMING

Open bridge policy – the legendary Russian bridge crew make this trip even more memorable as the bridge is always open (unless there’s some tricky maneuvering going on), and it’s a great place to hang out for the conversation and the views.
