ABOUT THE SHIP

dots-start-dots-row-1

Originally built for the Russia Academy of Science, the Vavilov is understandably not a luxury vessel but perfect for folks who like a combination of comfort and authentic expeditionary feel. She has one dining room with unreserved seating, a theatre-style presentation room, a Lounge/bar, and a well-stocked Polar Library. She is also ice-strengthened, has a fast open-water speed of 14.5 knots, and as such is a great option for trips to the polar regions.

  • Expedition Staff & Crew: 53
  • Guests: 92
  • Length: 117.04m
  • Draft: 6.09m
  • Ice Class: KM*L1(1)A2, Canadian Type B
  • Cruising Speed: 14.5 knots (in open water)
  • Elevator between passenger deck levels to the Bridge level

WHY WE LIKE HER

  • STABILITY

The Vavilov is super-stable. She has external stabilizers and a built-in trimming system so that you stay as comfortable as possible while on open crossings

  • QUIET

She was Scandinavian-built and designed to travel quietly during hydro-acoustic research for the Russian Academy of Science, meaning you’ll be creating minimal disturbance for the wildlife.

  • AMENITIES

She has a Finnish dry-heat sauna, a plunge pool, a hot water Jacuzzi, a small gymnasium and day spa with massage therapist. Not bad for a research vessel!

Everything you need to know about traveling to Antarctica. Including what time of the season is best for what you’re most keen to see.

ARCTIC

Everything you need to know about traveling to the Arctic. Which is a bit like our proverbial backyard/second home (because we’ve lived there).

WHAT TO BRING

Everything you need to know about what to bring on your trip. Including unusual stuff like why you might want goggles in Antarctica, or extra batteries in Svalbard.
