ABOUT THE SHIP

dots-start-dots-row-1

Built in 1976 as an oceanographic deep sea research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy, the M/V Plancius went through a 2 year refurbishment in 2008 which resulted in much more comfortable passenger areas and a significant improvement to amenities making it one of the most well-appointed expedition cruise vessels visiting Antarctica today.

  • 116 passengers
  • En suite toilet and shower in all cabins
  • A full complement of Mark V zodiacs
  • 2 gangways on starboard side
  • Diesel-electric propulsion system reducing noise and vibrations from engine
  • Average speed 10-12 knots
  • Ice-strengthened
  • Total crew of 45 (17 crew, 19 hotel staff, 8 expedition staff and one doctor)

WHY WE LIKE HER

  • ACTIVITIES

She offers a wide range of adventure activities, especially on the active Basecamp voyages which include camping, kayaking, mountaineering and hiking for free. They’re also one of the few ships that offer polar diving.

  • COMFORT

She’s comfortable (though not luxury), with en suite bathrooms, a writing desk, ample storage space and a flat screen TV with streaming movies in every cabin.

  • VIEWS

She has full walk-around possibilities on Deck 3, and an Observation Lounge and Library on Deck 5 with large windows offering a panoramic view for those who love to view wildlife or enjoy the surreal view as we sail past icebergs the size of office buildings here.

  • SPEED

Swift zodiac operations using two gangways means minimal wait time to get off the ship and out onto landings or adventure activities...an ideal vessel for active expedition cruising in the polar regions.
